Call to Worship 1 Corinthians 12 Adapted
One: O Lord, our Sovereign, how majestic is your name in all the earth!
All: You have set your glory above the heavens.
One: Out of the mouths of babes you have founded a bulwark because of your foes,
All: Even infants may silence the enemy and the avenger.
One: When I look at your heavens, the work of your fingers, All: the moon and the stars that you have established; One: what are human beings that you are mindful of them, All: mortals that you care for them?
One: Yet you have made us a little lower than you, All: you have crowned us with glory and honor. One: You have given us dominion over the works of your hands; All: you have put all things under our feet, One: all sheep and oxen, All: and also the beasts of the field, One: the birds of the air, and the fish of the sea, All: whatever passes along the paths of the seas.
One: O Lord, our Sovereign, how majestic is your name in all the earth!
All: And in your sovereignty is out peace.
One: So it is as we greet one another, “The peace of the Lord be with you.”
All: And also with you.
One: Let us pray.
Prayer of Invocation (in unison)
Triune God, in whom we live and move and have our being, we gather now in your creative spirit, your faithful witness, and your urgent inspiration that the unrest of this last week might speak its truth to us; and bless us to consider all that has transpired with a wisdom that is profuse with love.
We pray this while confessing that we have sinned against you in thought, word, and deed; in what we have done and in what we’ve left undone. We have not loved you with our whole hearts; we have not loved our neighbors as ourselves. We have harbored prejudice, given cover to racism, settled for our own safety when your love of all creation would press upon us a wider call than just this. We confess these things now in silence.
Silence.
Forgive us, we pray—and insist upon us a better, truer way. Save us from settling back into old habits of mind and behavior. Unsettle us, as this last week has been unsettled, that we might find better footing to create a world more of your manifestation and love. We pray this in Jesus’ name. Amen.
