Here are the books we can choose from for our Book Club this summer, whose meeting dates will be June 5-Jun 26 (4 Mondays); and July 31-August 28 (5 Mondays).
Peter Gomes, The Good Book. 400 pages. Preacher from Harvard’s Memorial Church. Excellent book about the Bible—its history and construction from someone who combines critical thinking with Christian devotion. (American, Baptist.
Frederick Buechner, The Hungering Dark. Sermons from the 70s and 80s. 128 pages long. (American, UCC.)
Cynthia Bourgeault, The Wisdom Jesus. 237 pages. (American, Episcopalian.)
David Bentley Hart, The Story of Christianity. 343 pages. Short chapters, quick survey of a long and complicated story. Useful for hearing about some of the good things the historical church has brought to bear. Maybe read it as a daily devotional, and discuss several “chapters” a week…? (American, Eastern Orthodox.)
Rowan Williams, Being Christian: Baptism, Bible, Eucharist, Prayer. 92 pages. (English, Anglican.)
Liz Goodman, Breaking and Entering. 212 pages. (American, UCC.)
