Just Wait

Updated: Dec 13, 2020

Here are worship materials for the 2nd Sunday of Advent.

"Waiting," Rochelle Blumenfeld, 21st c.

Call to Worship Psalm 85 Adapted

One: Lord, you were favorable to your land; you restored the fortunes of Jacob.

All: You forgave the iniquity of your people; you pardoned their sin.

One: Let me hear what God the Lord will speak.

All: For he will speak peace to his people.

One: to his faithful, to those who turn to him in their hearts.

All: Surely his salvation is at hand for those who fear him,

that his glory may dwell in our land.

One: Steadfast love and faithfulness will meet;

All: righteousness and peace will kiss each other.

One: Faithfulness will spring up from the ground,

All: and righteousness will look down from the sky.

One: The Lord will give what is good, and our land will yield its increase.

All: Righteousness will go before him, and will make a path for his steps.

One: So it will be as we now proclaim, “The peace of Christ be with you.”

All: And also with you.

Prayer of Invocation

Coming Lord, you who are mystery: how shall we prepare for you?

Coming Lord, you who are presence: how shall prepare ourselves for utter fullness?

Coming Lord, you who occur of a sudden: how shall we make passable your way?

Coming Lord, you who has immediate effect, light and life: how shall we ready ourselves and this world?

Bless us, then, to wait—to await in hope, and to receive in faith, your coming among us.

Any minute now. Any minute now. Amen.

Lighting the Advent Candles

One: The voice of one crying out in the wilderness:

“Prepare the way of the Lord, make his paths straight.”

All: Walk gently in the way of peace.

One: “Every valley shall be filled, and every mountain and hill shall be made low.”

All: Walk gently in the way of peace.

One: “The crooked shall be made straight, and the rough ways made smooth.”

All: Walk gently in the way of peace.

One: “All flesh shall see the salvation of God.”

All: Walk gently in the way of peace.

One: We light the first Advent candle and remember that hope is coming. As we light the second Advent candle, the candle of peace, we remember that the Prince of Peace is coming, and we join in the work of preparing the way. We walk gently in the way of peace

Sung Response Tune NCH #116

O Come, Desire of Nations, cheer and comfort by thine advent here.

Set gloom to flight, make hopelessness cease; fill the whole world with heaven’s peace.

Rejoice! Rejoice! Emmanuel shall come to thee, O Israel!
